Recon & SLI Present...

On Saturday 28th of September from 1pm, Recon and SLI are very pleased to present a matinee of intrigue and interest, with sights and sounds to excite and entertain.

Starting off in the back room of The Brudenell Social Club, there shall be performances from Super Hagman, Plurals, Kogumaza and Bongoleeros, before we adjourn to Hyde Park Picture House for Vibracathedral Orchestra, with visuals from Andrew Lampert. A treat, for sure...

Vibracathedral Orchestra & Andrew Lampert

A unique live collaboration between renowned British underground music group Vibracathedral Orchestra and New York artist Andrew Lampert. Unfolding across two performances, Lampert will transpose sounds and images recorded at VCO’s first gig at the Bradford Playhouse, into their second at the Hyde Park Picture House in Leeds.

Formed in 1998 by Julian Bradley, Neil Campbell, Bridget Hayden, Adam Davenport and Michael Flower, VCO performances are long-form, drone-based multi-instrumental improvisations. This will be one of the groups first shows in Yorkshire this decade.

Situated at the intersection of film, video and performance Lampert’s work explores cinema as a live encounter between projector, projectionist, audience and screen.

The Bongoleeros

Taking the more Dadaist, visceral elements from the underground noise scene into ever more remedial territory, The Bongoleeros’ appearances around the pubs, clubs and back streets of the world have become things of legend. Hailing from the hard-to-pinpoint suburb of Pitchley, Leeds, the duo mash primitive blues, football/spiritual chants, and post punk audience/performer confusion to unearth the very thing that makes us tick off beat. From The Brudenell Social Club to Hyde Park Picture House: The Bongoleeros will take you there.

Kogumaza

Nottingham’s premier droney ambient super-volume twin guitar and drums trio. The members past bands (Wolves of Greece, Lords, Little Girl With Cherries, Bob Tilton to name a few) pushed boundaries and blew minds, and Kogumaza have refined their take on repetitive riff-bliss to jawdropping levels. Their debut LP has been repressed by Low Point with a collaborative album with Nathan Bell (from Lungfish) coming soon.

Plurals

Dave HS (Me With Others), Daniel W J Mackenzie (Ekca Liena) and Michael Neaves (One Man Team Dance), along with an ever-changing network of live and recorded guests, form the core of Plurals, who are making their long overdue Leeds debut. Adopting a stance that is strictly improvised and always forward looking, there’s no typical Plurals performance, however, previous outings reveal the band’s interests in psychedelic, free-noise, concrète, drone and doom. 2011 saw them tour the UK with Canadian ethereal doom duo Nadja and record a Latitudes Session with Baker at London’s legendary Southern Studios. Their physical releases have found homes on Striate Cortex, Dead Pilot, Dead Sea Liner, Tor Press and Sheepscar Light Industrial.

Super Hagman

Super Hagman are the extended 12" version of Hagman. As a duo, Daniel & David Thomas (no relation), can usually found hunched over an elaborate landscape of wires, synthesizers, laboratory equipment and effect pedals, producing sounds that modulate between power line hum, rhythmic clatter and soundscapes of dense drone. Especially for Recon, Super Hagman has the added extra of a live drummer; Gavin Montgomery from Castrato Attack Group.

The Compass Pointed North...

And, there it went; the first SLI gig of the year and I, for one, had a jolly good time...

Thanks so much to Andie (These Feathers Have Plumes), Eddie (Aqua Dentata, Kev (Petals), Paul (BBBlood) and Rob (Midwich) for playing such amazing sets; it's totally a privilege to have had you all play on the same bill. Thank you.

And, of course, thanks to all at Wharf Chambers for being such welcoming and friendly hosts. Finally, thanks to everyone who came along for supporting SLI and the performers...

Oh, and get well soon Dave, whose illness meant that Hagman set turned into a live solo debut for me.

Now, as is the norm post-SLI gigs, you can listen to the first four minutes of each set (via SoundCloud) or download the full recordings of all five performances by scrolling a little further...

Each of the six sets are available to download in a .rar archive, here;

Idwal Fisher on KDM and SLI

A really nice write up of the last three SLI releases - Phil Julian | Sindre Bjerga | Astral Social Club - and the first release on Kirkstall Dark Matter (KDM) - Midwich - from the really nice Idwal Fisher.

Lovely stuff! There's even a plug for 'The Compass Points North' as the place to be for Idwal Fisher birthday celebrations; along with "a small glass of well chilled Manzanilla"...

June 22nd; with Aqua Dentata, BBBlood, Hagman, Midwich, Petals and These Feathers Have Plumes...

Hagman News...

So, we've just finished putting together our debut long player - Number Mask - which should appear at some point in the next month or two. We're very pleased with it and, as a little taster, here's a track we both liked a lot, that didn't make the final cut...

There's also a couple of live dates coming up;

May 24th at Wharf Chambers; with Phil Julian, Hobo Sonn, Foldhead and Moss Piglets

June 1st at The Packhorse; with Jealousy Mountain Duo, Spandril and others tbc.

Also, between the 24th and the 1st, we're hoping to play a few other dates in a mini-tour. Not sure if we'll manage to organise this in time, but details will be added if we can...

June 22nd at Wharf Chambers; with Aqua Dentata, BBBlood, Midwich, Petals and These Feathers Have Plumes...

| Aqua Dentata |

As Aqua Dentata, Eddie Nuttall has been garnering some well deserved praise of late. Some great releases on Beartown Records, SLI & Feral Tapes, complimented by gigs where the audience "just shuts the fuck up and listens" (Rob Hayler), has meant that an invite back to Leeds was always on the cards. Expect to be consumed by sounds conjured from synths, tapes and bowed miscellany; shimmering, beautiful, throbbing and fizzing...

| BBBlood |

Paul Watson, aka BBBlood, is a maestro of noise. Predominantly operating at the harsher end of the spectrum, the depth and consideration in Paul's approach will have warming to the embrace of even his harshest roar. Following on from a stand-out performance at Pete Cann's excellent Crater Lake Festival, I'm delighted it won't be too long until he's back up in Leeds...

| Hagman |

Daniel & David Thomas (no relation) are two men with lots of wire. The wire connects pedals, short-wave radios, oscillators, drum machines, synths and home-made Tupperware-tronics. Debut album - Number Mask - coming in the Summer. "Hagman drift sublimely along a path of beautifully nuanced drone" (Idwal Fisher).

| Midwich | (tbc)

Midwich is Rob Hayler: head honcho of Fencing Flatworm Recordings and Radio Free Midwich's longest serving blog-jockey. Having (only very) recently entered fatherhood (congratulations!), so (tbc) is the best I can do for now. Rob is claiming to have re-entered semi-retirement but, after the cracking live sets of the last twelve months and new releases on Kirkstall Dark Matter and We're Gonna Get Fucking Drunk Tonight Boys (the latter coming soon!), I can only imagine that he'll be itching to return. Augmented field recordings, deep electronic drone, head-banging.

| Petals |

Petals. Kevin Sanders. Hairdryer Excommunication. Former Sheepscar neighbour. Nice, shiny shoes. Library operative. Prolific, ebullient, drone-charmer. Deep, warm, crispy, electro-fuzz. Super!

| These Feathers Have Plumes |

I've been attempting to get Andie Brown, who performs as These Feathers Have Plumes, to record something for SLI or play in Leeds since the label began to function. Hence, it goes without saying how pleased I am that she's joined the line up for this gig. Look forward to deep, textured drones, with contact mic accompaniment and occasional field recording forays. Oh, and wine glasses.

The Thomas Family

There's been a little bit of news rumbling through on The Thomas Family, with a play on the latest Crow Versus Crow Radio Show and a graphic appearing on the blog. The Thomas Family are Daniel Thomas and Ap Martlet (the pair of us also being Hagman); this is a project we started last Autumn and has evolved into something that will emerge as a Crow Versus Crow Edition in the coming months. Looking forward to it. In the meantime, Variation 3 can be heard below...

S.O.I. Industries Anti-Christmas Anti-Party

So, on Wednesday December 19th, S.O.I. Industries are putting on a delicious looking event.

Live performances from Quip, Matt Robson, Midwich and Hagman, all hosted in the lovely surrounds of Wharf Chambers, with the seasonally friendly entry fee of a mere £1. You'd be crackers not to be there. (Crap pun fully intended.)

The official blurb...

Quip

Not content with wrenching out new and exciting shapes from indie-rock and post-hardcore in his three-piece The Diamond Sea, Ben Eyes has a prolific history as a hard-touring laptop performer.

Still one of the hardest working men in digital music, Ben Eyes is truly one of the scene's genuine all-rounders, able to operate in many of electronic music's diverse disciplines. Always fresh and never in danger of falling into an Apple Mac-shaped cake hole, Eyes reminds us why we love electronic music so much and why it is still vital.

Equally able to conjure up abstract fields of Post-Fennesz dream noise as direct to cranium dance music, with all points of wistful and romantic post-Boards of Canada tropes thrown in in-between, Ben's intimate knowledge of how to perform electronic music on stage has been honed over years and scores of performances from London to Berlin and Stockholm to Paris, soaking up multifarious influences from the digital itinerants of the continent.

Within the free-thinking walls of Wharf Chambers, expect anything and everything from one of Leeds' finest laptop troubadours. Be sure to prepare your dancing loafers.

Matt Robson

Matt Robson is a chameleon like figure who has roamed around the wilderness edges of underground music for nearly two decades. When Riot Grrrl happened, he was there, pounding out a tribal beat for Karen Ablaze's infamous Coping Saw unit, when the shock waves of emo hardcore hit the UK shores, he was there, banging the drum and generally ruining the chances of Rauschen of ever gaining any wider recognition. When post rock happened, he was there, drumming, producing and programming for Sierpinski and when the punk revolution re-invigorated electronic music in the early 21st century, he was there, bothering laptops and samplers in the burgeoning electronica scene and, curiously, for a few moments in the late nineties was even seen jobbing it on the drums for Hood.

Nevertheless, unlike many of his more successful peers, Robson's complete inability to judge the public mood and play the industry game has rendered him a peripheral character well below the footnotes or rock'n'roll, but from this lowly position, a curious and wayward talent has nonetheless emerged.

Most will know him for his work as an electronica producer, trading under the name of randomNumber, generating large amounts of wonky and vastly unpopular music for the likes of Rock Action, Catmobile and HighpointLowlife during the earlier 2000s, whilst others may be aware of his work on drums, engineering and production in bands such as Ailsa Craig and The Blanche Hudson Weekend.

Tonight will be a rare opportunity to see one of Matt's electronic sets, taking in unreleased solo work and re-workings and remixes of Ailsa Craig and Blanche Hudson Weekend material.

Midwich (Striate Cortex, Matching Head, Sheepscar Light Industrial)

Rob Hayler has also been knocking around for a while. After a highly productive few years at the turn of the century during which he co-ran the influential micro-label Fencing Flatworm Recordings and helped promote (sadly missed) Leeds experimental music institution The Termite Club, he realised that the way to garner serious praise, mystique and 'elder statesman' status was to disappear for five years then make a triumphant return. So he did. It worked!

Since 2009 he has been tirelessly documenting the noise underground via his blog Radiofreemidwich and, always tempted by the limelight, has returned to the fray himself with his solo project, Midwich. Well-reviewed releases on Striate Cortex, Matching Head, Phil Todd's Memoirs of an Aesthete and Leeds label-du-jour Sheepscar Light Industrial have accompanied a smattering of live appearances. Crowds have been charmed by the sight of a 40 year old man rocking out to seemingly beatless drones. Currently pioneering the 'furry javelin' sound - a psychedelic, bubbling, ego-dissolving, fuzz augmented occasionally with field recordings - any performance from Midwich is sure to be a grin-inducing treat. Unless he is plagued with technical difficulties in which case the set will be replaced by industrial strength swearing.

http://radiofreemidwich.wordpress.com/

Hagman (Sheepscar Light Industrial)

Daniel & David Thomas (no relation) are two men with a variety of noise making devices and lots of wires. As Lord Hayler of Midwich once wrote; "Hagman present a hard-won equilibrium teetering between power line hum and the rhythmic clatter of early 80s electro-industrial. As sinuously alien as a millipede clambering over tree bark, yet as warm as a cat asleep on your chest." Expect shortwave radios, oscillators, drum machines and more effect pedals than a band famous for having lots of effects pedals.

SLI.WC.24112012

So, first of all, thank you to everyone who performed, helped and came along last night: I thought it was a brilliant night and I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did.

Thanks to the lovely folk of Wharf Chambers for hosting the event, to Cloughie, Phil & Rob for totally nailing the Truant comeback, to Ian & Kieron (Hobo Sonn), Darren & Andy (Vile Plumage), Dave & *ahem* me (Hagman) and Neil & Paul (Early Hominids) for amazing performances.

You can listen to the first four minutes of each set (using the fancy little gizmo below) or download the full recordings of all five performances by scrolling a little further...

Each of the five sets are available to download in a .rar archive, here;

And, further thanks to those who kicked the evening off with the pre-gig-gig in the bar at Wharf Chambers. Thanks, again, to Darren & Andy (Vile Plumage), to Pete (Half an Abortion and to Darren & Christian (The Bongoleeros). A video of this beautiful aperitif can be viewed below (c/o Filthy Darren Wyngarde)...

And, also captured for posterity, here's the video of the Vile Plumage set (again, c/o Filthy Darren Wyngarde)...

Finally, big thanks to Rhid, for supplying the doo wop mix that provided a soundtrack for the night, between the live sets. It is available below for your listening pleasure...

SLI at Wharf Chambers November 24th

So, not long to go before the next SLI evening at Wharf Chambers is upon us, just under two weeks!

Early Hominids

Mirfield's finest power-duo: Neil Campbell (Astral Social Club) and Paul Walsh (Foldhead). Combined, primed, wined and dined; now it's time for them to get busy with a joint sonic assault. I'm predicting an amalgamation of pints, table-top electro-trickery, strobe lights and tightly co-ordinated dance routines. Both Neil and Paul pulled off cracking sets at the first event and it seemed like a no brainer to ask them to perform together.

There isn't an Early Hominids web presence, but you can catch up with their individual exploits online.

Hagman

Daniel & David Thomas (no relation); two men with a variety of noise making devices, effects pedals and lots of wires. As Lord Hayler of Midwich once wrote; "Hagman present a hard-won equilibrium teetering between power line hum and the rhythmic clatter of early 80s electro-industrial. As sinuously alien as a millipede clambering over tree bark, yet as warm as a cat asleep on your chest."

Hobo Sonn

Next up is Hobo Sonn, a project of Ian Murphy (Gryn Brvs), but performing this evening as a duo with Kieron Piercy (Spoils and Relics) and; two chaps who weave together a tapestry of sound. Expect an alluring and considered blend of manipulated field recordings, doctored electronics and a variety other intriguing sounds.

Truant

Remember the millennium? Calendars everywhere ditched their 19 and went all 20 on us. Around this time a friendship was burgeoning between two of Leeds' Termite Club comrades in arms; Rob Hayler (one-time head honcho of Fencing Flatworm and full-time Midwich) and Michael "Cloughy" Clough (one-time Rancid Poultry, PRP Group and Klunk member, now a full-time Kleeklonking, Atem Tanzing, 1971 Nacht-action fetishist). Deep analogue rumblings and shimmering drones of collaboration filled the air and the duo soon found themselves trio; joined, as they were, by Phil Todd (full-time Astray Navigations and too many part-time variations to even begin listing) who had recently relocated from Stoke to the tropical climes of West Yorkshire. After a few gigs and an album on Fencing Flatworm (http://radiofreemidwich.files.wordpress.com/2011/04/01-that-fight-you-lost.mp3) the fire of this "no audience super group" was extinguished. Gone.

In a half-remembered haze, legends were constructed, talk of rock'n'roll excess and in-fighting lingered, unverified audio tapes of Troggs-like arguments circled the underground (allegedly from a source "close to the band" who was present at the recording sessions for the fabled second album). Truant remained quiet. Until now! Well, actually until Spring 2011, when almost a decade had passed by and Clough, Hayler & Todd dusted off the master tapes and went about splicing together 'The Truant Accord' (released on Memoirs of a Flatworm - a collaborative concoction of Memoirs of an Aesthete and Fencing Flatworm). The Truant Accord came and went; seemingly, that was that for Truant. However, a throwaway comment that a Truant reformation would be good - based on my enjoyment of what seems to be a deliciously fruitful period for all three truants - planted a seed which has germinated in to this performance and there's even chit-chat being exchanged about "Truant III" in the works.

Vile Plumage

The duo of Darren Wyngarde (Filthy Turd) and Andrew Jarvis ("the quite man of the Stoke-on-Trent experimentalism" - Idwal Fisher) shall be bringing their own, unique brand of fuzzy muck, dictaphone field recordings, silver mixers and sound-witchery to Wharf Chambers. Delicious.

So, the David Thomas half of Hagman has uploaded his latest solo work and it is well worth a listen. A tasty treat, for sure...

Core of the Coalman's Comprehensive Catch Up

So, as I sit here on holiday (full of the same cold I always get after a long haul flight) it seems fitting to post about Jorge (that's Mr Core of the Coalman) who has just posted what can only be described as a comprehensive account of his recent travels, touring, recording and sight-seeing. In this journal, of particular note to me is Jorge's recounting of his time in Leeds for the gig with Ashtray Navigations, Cm nG and Hagman, about whom he says some lovely things;

It was, indeed, a cracking night; I should also add that the Cm nG set can be tracked down on the ever dependable "The Crow Versus Crow Radio Show (#38") and that I have been loving the discs I traded with Jorge. Using Affinity Groups as a soundtrack to my time in Manchester Airport made the experience eminently more enjoyable.

Hagman Played on Crow Versus Crow

The title track of Hagman's Wormwood release on SLI, gets a play on the current edition of the rather spiffing Crow Versus Crow radio show.

The last few copies of Wormwood are still available from Bandcamp.
