The Compass Pointed North...

And, there it went; the first SLI gig of the year and I, for one, had a jolly good time...

Thanks so much to Andie (These Feathers Have Plumes), Eddie (Aqua Dentata, Kev (Petals), Paul (BBBlood) and Rob (Midwich) for playing such amazing sets; it's totally a privilege to have had you all play on the same bill. Thank you.

And, of course, thanks to all at Wharf Chambers for being such welcoming and friendly hosts. Finally, thanks to everyone who came along for supporting SLI and the performers...

Oh, and get well soon Dave, whose illness meant that Hagman set turned into a live solo debut for me.

Now, as is the norm post-SLI gigs, you can listen to the first four minutes of each set (via SoundCloud) or download the full recordings of all five performances by scrolling a little further...

Each of the six sets are available to download in a .rar archive, here;

A Last Nudge North...

And so, the week is upon us for the first SLI gig of the year. For a mere £4 you can join us in the lovely surrounds of Wharf Chambers, where you'll get to see and hear Aqua Dentata, BBBlood, Hagman, Midwich, Petals and These Feathers Have Plumes...

You can also wish Idwal Fisher a happy birthday...

Idwal Fisher on KDM and SLI

A really nice write up of the last three SLI releases - Phil Julian | Sindre Bjerga | Astral Social Club - and the first release on Kirkstall Dark Matter (KDM) - Midwich - from the really nice Idwal Fisher.

Lovely stuff! There's even a plug for 'The Compass Points North' as the place to be for Idwal Fisher birthday celebrations; along with "a small glass of well chilled Manzanilla"...

June 22nd; with Aqua Dentata, BBBlood, Hagman, Midwich, Petals and These Feathers Have Plumes...

Hagman News...

So, we've just finished putting together our debut long player - Number Mask - which should appear at some point in the next month or two. We're very pleased with it and, as a little taster, here's a track we both liked a lot, that didn't make the final cut...

There's also a couple of live dates coming up;

May 24th at Wharf Chambers; with Phil Julian, Hobo Sonn, Foldhead and Moss Piglets

June 1st at The Packhorse; with Jealousy Mountain Duo, Spandril and others tbc.

Also, between the 24th and the 1st, we're hoping to play a few other dates in a mini-tour. Not sure if we'll manage to organise this in time, but details will be added if we can...

June 22nd at Wharf Chambers; with Aqua Dentata, BBBlood, Midwich, Petals and These Feathers Have Plumes...

| Aqua Dentata |

As Aqua Dentata, Eddie Nuttall has been garnering some well deserved praise of late. Some great releases on Beartown Records, SLI & Feral Tapes, complimented by gigs where the audience "just shuts the fuck up and listens" (Rob Hayler), has meant that an invite back to Leeds was always on the cards. Expect to be consumed by sounds conjured from synths, tapes and bowed miscellany; shimmering, beautiful, throbbing and fizzing...

| BBBlood |

Paul Watson, aka BBBlood, is a maestro of noise. Predominantly operating at the harsher end of the spectrum, the depth and consideration in Paul's approach will have warming to the embrace of even his harshest roar. Following on from a stand-out performance at Pete Cann's excellent Crater Lake Festival, I'm delighted it won't be too long until he's back up in Leeds...

| Hagman |

Daniel & David Thomas (no relation) are two men with lots of wire. The wire connects pedals, short-wave radios, oscillators, drum machines, synths and home-made Tupperware-tronics. Debut album - Number Mask - coming in the Summer. "Hagman drift sublimely along a path of beautifully nuanced drone" (Idwal Fisher).

| Midwich | (tbc)

Midwich is Rob Hayler: head honcho of Fencing Flatworm Recordings and Radio Free Midwich's longest serving blog-jockey. Having (only very) recently entered fatherhood (congratulations!), so (tbc) is the best I can do for now. Rob is claiming to have re-entered semi-retirement but, after the cracking live sets of the last twelve months and new releases on Kirkstall Dark Matter and We're Gonna Get Fucking Drunk Tonight Boys (the latter coming soon!), I can only imagine that he'll be itching to return. Augmented field recordings, deep electronic drone, head-banging.

| Petals |

Petals. Kevin Sanders. Hairdryer Excommunication. Former Sheepscar neighbour. Nice, shiny shoes. Library operative. Prolific, ebullient, drone-charmer. Deep, warm, crispy, electro-fuzz. Super!

| These Feathers Have Plumes |

I've been attempting to get Andie Brown, who performs as These Feathers Have Plumes, to record something for SLI or play in Leeds since the label began to function. Hence, it goes without saying how pleased I am that she's joined the line up for this gig. Look forward to deep, textured drones, with contact mic accompaniment and occasional field recording forays. Oh, and wine glasses.

Crow Versus Crow & SLI Present...

So, the wonderful Crow Versus Crow and Sheepscar Light Industrial have teamed up to present...

Petrels, Aqua Dentata, Max Bondi, BBBlood & Ben Gaymer...

Saturday 15th September 2012, Wharf Chambers, Leeds

Facebook event page here.

Petrels (Tartaruga Records / Denovali Records)

'...A deluge of beautiful noise and crushing melody, which ebbs and flows beneath the surface. Utilizing bowed strings, discarded electronics, found percussion and occasional vocals, portentous drone and cascading rhythm.’

Aqua Dentata

As Aqua Dentata, Eddie Nuttall (Baraclough) creates sounds with synths, tapes and, according to the blurb at Beartown Records, "bowed miscellany"; sounds to consume and get lost in, be they shimmering and beautiful or throbbing and fizzing...

http://soundcloud.com/aquadentata

Max Bondi (Tartaruga Records)

'...An exploration of constraint, limitations, and repetition. Fragments of sound fold in upon themselves, constructing patterns and melodies which overlay, interfere and diverge, varying from dense clusters of pulsing frequencies to torrents of cascading electronic notes.

This is uncompromising machine music, but with a melodic edge, rhythmical but irregular, ‘electrical’ rather than electronic.'

BBBlood

Paul Watson, aka BBBlood, is a maestro of noise. Harsh noise. Wandering through his extensive back catalogue, you'll come up against some pretty intense sounds; however, there's a depth and consideration with Paul's approach that soon has you warming to them and reaping the rewards accordingly...

Ben Gaymer

Ebbing, swelling, layered and heavily textured drone from the Bleeding Heart Narrative guitarist, soon to release his debut record on Tartaruga Records.
