Idwal Fisher on SLI.016-18
Lots of lovely words from the lovely Idwal Fisher blog, on the subject of recent SLI releases from Tuluum Shimmering, Daniel Thomas & Kevin Sanders and Plurals...
"Far from running out of steam and offering up mates rates deals SLI continues to deliver quality material for the enlightened connoisseur. Three, three inch CDR’s usually works out to around an hours worth of entertainment, that when backed up with stark, generic, black and white covers and an easy to navigate website leaves everybody and me going home happy."

Gary Clarke’s Lustrum
Taken from the Yorkshire Dance website;
"Pioneered by Merseyside Dance Initiative, Lustrum brings together 15 dance artists to devise, create and showcase five dance works (a solo, a duet, a trio, a quartet and a quintet) in five days; a fast and furious collaborative project driven by creative instinct and quick-fire choices.
Using chance to dictate outcomes, participants will switch between the roles of choreographer and performer from day to day, experimenting with the generation of material and creation of performance work in a spontaneous, non-critical way.
This vigorous 6-day project offers a unique opportunity for a team of experienced artists to meet, network, exchange ideas, enrich and develop both choreographic and performance skills and experience staging an evening of professional work in a very short time frame."
Lustrum is led by Gary Clarke, a friend and collaborator of many years; who asked me to be part of Lustrum in Leeds. Of course, I agreed and we began working on what my involvement would entail.
As you could probably ascertain from the blurb above, Lustrum is a challenging project. There are rules, processes, restrictions and limits to be observed: the dance artists are pushed to create each day, for five consecutive days, what they would normally spend weeks on. I shall be visiting Yorkshire Dance daily, seeing what has been done, talking with the participants and taking away whatever I can, in preparation to perform a live soundtrack to all five pieces on Saturday night, 27th July. Should be grand...

Daniel Thomas & Kevin Sanders
Following on from our initial collaboration - Transit Timing Observations from Kepler - and the follow up release - Transit Timing Variations - me and Kevin Sanders have been hard at work, recording a new long player - Frequency Variations in the Kepler Delta - exciting times!
Any hoo, more details of the new release will materialise soon but, in the meantime, you'll be able to catch our first live performance in just a fortnight from now! We're playing along with Sump and Carer at the Royal Park Cellars. Going to have to pull some doom laden, heavy cosmic drone out of the bag to fit in with these guys...
Oh, and along with NASA endorsements we've been honoured with a play on the most recent edition of the wonderful Crow Versus Crow Radio Show...

The Compass Pointed North...
And, there it went; the first SLI gig of the year and I, for one, had a jolly good time...
Thanks so much to Andie (These Feathers Have Plumes), Eddie (Aqua Dentata, Kev (Petals), Paul (BBBlood) and Rob (Midwich) for playing such amazing sets; it's totally a privilege to have had you all play on the same bill. Thank you.
And, of course, thanks to all at Wharf Chambers for being such welcoming and friendly hosts. Finally, thanks to everyone who came along for supporting SLI and the performers...
Oh, and get well soon Dave, whose illness meant that Hagman set turned into a live solo debut for me.
Now, as is the norm post-SLI gigs, you can listen to the first four minutes of each set (via SoundCloud) or download the full recordings of all five performances by scrolling a little further...
Each of the six sets are available to download in a .rar archive, here;

Transit Timing Variations at Igloo Magazine
A great little write up of Transit Timing Variations, the most recent collaboration between Kevin Sanders and my good self, has just been posted over at Igloo Magazine. Many thanks to Stephen for this...
"With some beautiful music of the spheres eventually arising out of drone and whirr, perhaps the spirit of the original Kepler was leaning over their shoulders."

Daniel Thomas Bandcamp
Hey there, just a quick note to say that I've created a Bandcamp for Daniel Thomas stuff;
There's a couple of things there, including 'Delighted in Isolation', which was originally released on the wonderful Striate Cortex and sold out a while back...
New album coming soon on (the equally wonderful) Kirkstall Dark Matter...

Idwal Fisher on KDM and SLI
A really nice write up of the last three SLI releases - Phil Julian | Sindre Bjerga | Astral Social Club - and the first release on Kirkstall Dark Matter (KDM) - Midwich - from the really nice Idwal Fisher.
Lovely stuff! There's even a plug for 'The Compass Points North' as the place to be for Idwal Fisher birthday celebrations; along with "a small glass of well chilled Manzanilla"...
June 22nd; with Aqua Dentata, BBBlood, Hagman, Midwich, Petals and These Feathers Have Plumes...
"Julian is like a steady hand on the tiller. You know you are in capable hands and this twenty minute snatch of his work is just about damned near perfect."

The Thomas Family
There's been a little bit of news rumbling through on The Thomas Family, with a play on the latest Crow Versus Crow Radio Show and a graphic appearing on the blog. The Thomas Family are Daniel Thomas and Ap Martlet (the pair of us also being Hagman); this is a project we started last Autumn and has evolved into something that will emerge as a Crow Versus Crow Edition in the coming months. Looking forward to it. In the meantime, Variation 3 can be heard below...

Kirkstall Dark Matter
So, that Ap Martlet chap has gone and started a label! Let's all say hello to Kirkstall Dark Matter and celebrate that the first release is a fine affair from none other than Midwich. Tip, and indeed, top...
There's also a Facebook Page. Look out for more from KDM - or K(MF)DM, if you share the same sense of humour as Lord Hayler and myself - including a new long player from a certain Daniel Thomas!

RFM : The Zellaby Awards
And so, as one year ends and another begins, Radio Free Midwich takes a look back at the last year, with The Zellaby Awards. I'm pleased and honoured that SLI makes a few appearances in some very prestigious company...
There's awards for Aqua Dentata, Petals, Striate Cortex and even some chap named Daniel Thomas. And, if such honours weren't enough, three SLI discs (and my solo release on Striate Cortex) make the top twenty releases list. Wonderful!
I guess this is as good a spot to say thank you for all the support that I've received since starting SLI. Thanks...

"From watching Mel O’Dubhslaine reinventing music in Kieron Piercy’s basement through to laughing out loud on the bus as I listened to BBBlood’s breaking glass tape, the year in music has been remarkable."

RFM on Transit Timing Observations From Kepler
A super review from the super Radio Free Midwich, looking at the Daniel Thomas & Kevin Sanders disc; Transit Timing Observations From Kepler, released on Hairdryer Excommunication.
Copies are still available (I think?) from Mr Kevin Sanders himself, over at Hairdryer Excommunication
"There are (at least) two ways to listen to this. One is to let the dominant roars and throbs act as a welcome ego suppressant, the other is to concentrate, brow furrowed. The rewards of the former are the mental equivalent of a hot bath, the latter is the approach for industrial archeologists (sic). Taking a trowel and brush to this reveals rusted gears with glinting diamond teeth, motionless but still suggesting strange grinding epicycles."
