RFM Reviews of New SLI Discs

Another great write up from the always great Radio Free Midwich. Super stuff...

SLI at Igloo Magazine

Thanks to Stephen Fruitman for his continued support of SLI and a great little batch of reviews he's done, over at Igloo Magazine...

The Nancy Mixtape

It's not all noise...

A compilation of favourites from Nancy's releases on Reprise in the 1960s; taken from the Sundazed Music re-issues of 'Boots', 'How Does That Grab You?', 'Nancy In London', 'Country, My Way', 'Sugar', 'Moving With Nancy' and 'Nancy'. Enjoy...

S.O.I. Industries Anti-Christmas Anti-Party

So, on Wednesday December 19th, S.O.I. Industries are putting on a delicious looking event.

Live performances from Quip, Matt Robson, Midwich and Hagman, all hosted in the lovely surrounds of Wharf Chambers, with the seasonally friendly entry fee of a mere £1. You'd be crackers not to be there. (Crap pun fully intended.)

The official blurb...

Quip

Not content with wrenching out new and exciting shapes from indie-rock and post-hardcore in his three-piece The Diamond Sea, Ben Eyes has a prolific history as a hard-touring laptop performer.

Still one of the hardest working men in digital music, Ben Eyes is truly one of the scene's genuine all-rounders, able to operate in many of electronic music's diverse disciplines. Always fresh and never in danger of falling into an Apple Mac-shaped cake hole, Eyes reminds us why we love electronic music so much and why it is still vital.

Equally able to conjure up abstract fields of Post-Fennesz dream noise as direct to cranium dance music, with all points of wistful and romantic post-Boards of Canada tropes thrown in in-between, Ben's intimate knowledge of how to perform electronic music on stage has been honed over years and scores of performances from London to Berlin and Stockholm to Paris, soaking up multifarious influences from the digital itinerants of the continent.

Within the free-thinking walls of Wharf Chambers, expect anything and everything from one of Leeds' finest laptop troubadours. Be sure to prepare your dancing loafers.

Matt Robson

Matt Robson is a chameleon like figure who has roamed around the wilderness edges of underground music for nearly two decades. When Riot Grrrl happened, he was there, pounding out a tribal beat for Karen Ablaze's infamous Coping Saw unit, when the shock waves of emo hardcore hit the UK shores, he was there, banging the drum and generally ruining the chances of Rauschen of ever gaining any wider recognition. When post rock happened, he was there, drumming, producing and programming for Sierpinski and when the punk revolution re-invigorated electronic music in the early 21st century, he was there, bothering laptops and samplers in the burgeoning electronica scene and, curiously, for a few moments in the late nineties was even seen jobbing it on the drums for Hood.

Nevertheless, unlike many of his more successful peers, Robson's complete inability to judge the public mood and play the industry game has rendered him a peripheral character well below the footnotes or rock'n'roll, but from this lowly position, a curious and wayward talent has nonetheless emerged.

Most will know him for his work as an electronica producer, trading under the name of randomNumber, generating large amounts of wonky and vastly unpopular music for the likes of Rock Action, Catmobile and HighpointLowlife during the earlier 2000s, whilst others may be aware of his work on drums, engineering and production in bands such as Ailsa Craig and The Blanche Hudson Weekend.

Tonight will be a rare opportunity to see one of Matt's electronic sets, taking in unreleased solo work and re-workings and remixes of Ailsa Craig and Blanche Hudson Weekend material.

Midwich (Striate Cortex, Matching Head, Sheepscar Light Industrial)

Rob Hayler has also been knocking around for a while. After a highly productive few years at the turn of the century during which he co-ran the influential micro-label Fencing Flatworm Recordings and helped promote (sadly missed) Leeds experimental music institution The Termite Club, he realised that the way to garner serious praise, mystique and 'elder statesman' status was to disappear for five years then make a triumphant return. So he did. It worked!

Since 2009 he has been tirelessly documenting the noise underground via his blog Radiofreemidwich and, always tempted by the limelight, has returned to the fray himself with his solo project, Midwich. Well-reviewed releases on Striate Cortex, Matching Head, Phil Todd's Memoirs of an Aesthete and Leeds label-du-jour Sheepscar Light Industrial have accompanied a smattering of live appearances. Crowds have been charmed by the sight of a 40 year old man rocking out to seemingly beatless drones. Currently pioneering the 'furry javelin' sound - a psychedelic, bubbling, ego-dissolving, fuzz augmented occasionally with field recordings - any performance from Midwich is sure to be a grin-inducing treat. Unless he is plagued with technical difficulties in which case the set will be replaced by industrial strength swearing.

Hagman (Sheepscar Light Industrial)

Daniel & David Thomas (no relation) are two men with a variety of noise making devices and lots of wires. As Lord Hayler of Midwich once wrote; "Hagman present a hard-won equilibrium teetering between power line hum and the rhythmic clatter of early 80s electro-industrial. As sinuously alien as a millipede clambering over tree bark, yet as warm as a cat asleep on your chest." Expect shortwave radios, oscillators, drum machines and more effect pedals than a band famous for having lots of effects pedals.

SLI at Wharf Chambers November 24th

So, not long to go before the next SLI evening at Wharf Chambers is upon us, just under two weeks!

Early Hominids

Mirfield's finest power-duo: Neil Campbell (Astral Social Club) and Paul Walsh (Foldhead). Combined, primed, wined and dined; now it's time for them to get busy with a joint sonic assault. I'm predicting an amalgamation of pints, table-top electro-trickery, strobe lights and tightly co-ordinated dance routines. Both Neil and Paul pulled off cracking sets at the first event and it seemed like a no brainer to ask them to perform together.

There isn't an Early Hominids web presence, but you can catch up with their individual exploits online.

Hagman

Daniel & David Thomas (no relation); two men with a variety of noise making devices, effects pedals and lots of wires. As Lord Hayler of Midwich once wrote; "Hagman present a hard-won equilibrium teetering between power line hum and the rhythmic clatter of early 80s electro-industrial. As sinuously alien as a millipede clambering over tree bark, yet as warm as a cat asleep on your chest."

Hobo Sonn

Next up is Hobo Sonn, a project of Ian Murphy (Gryn Brvs), but performing this evening as a duo with Kieron Piercy (Spoils and Relics) and; two chaps who weave together a tapestry of sound. Expect an alluring and considered blend of manipulated field recordings, doctored electronics and a variety other intriguing sounds.

Truant

Remember the millennium? Calendars everywhere ditched their 19 and went all 20 on us. Around this time a friendship was burgeoning between two of Leeds' Termite Club comrades in arms; Rob Hayler (one-time head honcho of Fencing Flatworm and full-time Midwich) and Michael "Cloughy" Clough (one-time Rancid Poultry, PRP Group and Klunk member, now a full-time Kleeklonking, Atem Tanzing, 1971 Nacht-action fetishist). Deep analogue rumblings and shimmering drones of collaboration filled the air and the duo soon found themselves trio; joined, as they were, by Phil Todd (full-time Astray Navigations and too many part-time variations to even begin listing) who had recently relocated from Stoke to the tropical climes of West Yorkshire. After a few gigs and an album on Fencing Flatworm (http://radiofreemidwich.files.wordpress.com/2011/04/01-that-fight-you-lost.mp3) the fire of this "no audience super group" was extinguished. Gone.

In a half-remembered haze, legends were constructed, talk of rock'n'roll excess and in-fighting lingered, unverified audio tapes of Troggs-like arguments circled the underground (allegedly from a source "close to the band" who was present at the recording sessions for the fabled second album). Truant remained quiet. Until now! Well, actually until Spring 2011, when almost a decade had passed by and Clough, Hayler & Todd dusted off the master tapes and went about splicing together 'The Truant Accord' (released on Memoirs of a Flatworm - a collaborative concoction of Memoirs of an Aesthete and Fencing Flatworm). The Truant Accord came and went; seemingly, that was that for Truant. However, a throwaway comment that a Truant reformation would be good - based on my enjoyment of what seems to be a deliciously fruitful period for all three truants - planted a seed which has germinated in to this performance and there's even chit-chat being exchanged about "Truant III" in the works.

Vile Plumage

The duo of Darren Wyngarde (Filthy Turd) and Andrew Jarvis ("the quite man of the Stoke-on-Trent experimentalism" - Idwal Fisher) shall be bringing their own, unique brand of fuzzy muck, dictaphone field recordings, silver mixers and sound-witchery to Wharf Chambers. Delicious.

Idwal Fisher on SLI.004 through SLI.009

Well, it seems as if the last six releases found themselves on the Idwal Fisher review pile all at once. I blame Royal Mail. Still, undeterred by this little monochrome haul, he ploughed on and has some very nice things to say about the experience.

RFM on SLI.007 through SLI.009

Some lovely words, about lovely people and the last three lovely SLI releases, from the lovely Radio Free Midwich. Lovely.

MuhMur Talks Petals

A nice write up of the Petals SLI disc from the thoroughly decent MuhMur blog.

Whilst generally spreading the love, I'll mention that you can catch Steve's (that's Mr MuhMur) first foray in to radio on MixCloud and further adventures will be broadcast via Soundart Radio. Rumour has it that a future show will focus on friend of SLI, Mr Neil "Astral Social Club" Campbell, so should be well worth listening out for.

Any how, back to Petals thoughts;

RFM on Transit Timing Observations From Kepler

A super review from the super Radio Free Midwich, looking at the Daniel Thomas & Kevin Sanders disc; Transit Timing Observations From Kepler, released on Hairdryer Excommunication.

Copies are still available (I think?) from Mr Kevin Sanders himself, over at Hairdryer Excommunication

Core of the Coalman's Comprehensive Catch Up

So, as I sit here on holiday (full of the same cold I always get after a long haul flight) it seems fitting to post about Jorge (that's Mr Core of the Coalman) who has just posted what can only be described as a comprehensive account of his recent travels, touring, recording and sight-seeing. In this journal, of particular note to me is Jorge's recounting of his time in Leeds for the gig with Ashtray Navigations, Cm nG and Hagman, about whom he says some lovely things;

It was, indeed, a cracking night; I should also add that the Cm nG set can be tracked down on the ever dependable "The Crow Versus Crow Radio Show (#38") and that I have been loving the discs I traded with Jorge. Using Affinity Groups as a soundtrack to my time in Manchester Airport made the experience eminently more enjoyable.

Harsh Digital Nose VST

As too many time happens, this VST simply laid on my plug-ins folder for a too long time, without me having time to dig into it since today.
I must say that after just ten minutes of semi-random tweaking I regretted not having used it before and after twenty I came out with a solid groove, possibly for a new track.

The concept behind resembles the one of a program that I used to run on the Amiga called RGS so a small paint program used to shape waveforms and the ability to import images. Those data are then added or multiplied together according to the knobs on the right to produce sounds.

Harsh Digital Nose a synthesizer that converts two images into two oscillator waveforms and then mixes them in various horrible ways. You can drag and drop images or draw them on the plugin in real time.

WELL ITS A LITTLE BIT OF EXPERIMENTAL FUN AND YOU CAN PAINT AND DRAW AND COMMUNICATE WITH THE ALIENS TOO.
The name couldn't have been better as it develops some very convincing industrial leads. Deep, polyhedric sounds with sharp highs are guaranteed.

Idwal Fisher Talks SLI

A cracking write up of the first two SLI discs from the wonderful world of Idwal Fisher.

As I type this, there's still three copies of Twenty-three Taels available from Bandcamp; when they're gone, that's it.

All the copies I had of I Can Remember The Faces Of All The Grebs At My School have now been sold, although the free download is still available. If, however, you'd like to contact Mel, via her blog, I think she still has a few copies for sale.

Hagman Played on Crow Versus Crow

The title track of Hagman's Wormwood release on SLI, gets a play on the current edition of the rather spiffing Crow Versus Crow radio show.

The last few copies of Wormwood are still available from Bandcamp.

Sheepscar Excommunication

Now, it may not be common knowledge, but Kevin Sanders aka Petals; head honcho of the wonderful Hairdryer Excommunication, used to live (like me) in sunny Sheepscar. However, I should mention that he wasn't excommunicated from Sheepscar, he left with the blessing of LS8 for the equally tropical climes of Huddersfield. The title of this blog post relates instead to what has been a very exciting collaboration between Mr Sanders and my good self.

Readers of the Hairdryer Excommunication blog may have already spotted the following;

Hopefully there will be more to report very soon, with details on the release of 'Daniel Thomas & Kevin Sanders - Transit Timing Observations from Kepler'.

An unrelated collaborative oddity...

RFM Talks SLI
